ShrevePride: An Origin Story
In 2019, the year before the world changed, four Shreveport natives came together to fill a void felt deep within our city. We created an event, Shreveport Q-Prom: Glitz & Grunge, which was started as a safe place for people around us to interact, entertain, and have genuine fun. Even in 2019, few spaces existed where everyone regardless of sex, gender, race, or ability can come together and celebrate uniqueness. We all need a place to belong, and your Q-Prom creators are here to do that!
The first Q-Prom celebrated the party life of Studio Q, allowed some R&R in our comfortable casbah, fed the inner child with our gamer lounge filled with nostalgic snacks, and brought out the rocker in us all downstairs in “708 Soundstage.”" The event had over 300 guests for a night full of love, laughter, and acceptance. After the big event, we were able to donate $1,000 to the team at Project Celebration.
On a high from the first Q-Prom celebration, we made big plans for 2020. The pandemic threw us a curveball, but we rose to the challenge. The team pivoted to a completely virtual Pride Month celebration which had two components: Fun and education. We hosted weekly live videos on everything from cocktail making, outfit choices, dinner options, and make-up tips leading up to our world-class virtual Pride Month celebration. While fun is a measure of success, we also knew our community members were need of substance, so we created streaming content focused on LGBTQ+ issues when receiving healthcare, intersectionality and race relations, and mental health issues faced by queer individuals.
All of this culminated in a world-class, first-of-its-kind event called “Shreveport Q-Prom: Pieces of Pride” which featured drag queen performances by Faye Hexx, Mirage, Jade Summers, and The Ladi Phat Kat and musical acts including Johnny Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls, Fitz & the Tantrums, Ava Max, Sam Fischer, Alec Benjamin, Ashe, Hydrogen Child, Frank Jones, and AJ Haynes. With the success of Pieces of Pride, we were able to donate $1,000 to the Philadelphia Center.
As 2021 approached, the pandemic was slowly dying down, but safety remained top priority. We needed each other. We need to see faces. We needed to have in-person conversations. We needed community! Thus, Field Gay was born. A day full of interactive games played by community teams at our beloved AC Steere Park. Vendors sold goods and informed members of community programs. Food trucks took over the parking lot filling hungry bellies. Silly rain would not cloud our day of freedom. Medals were rewarded, and a was trophy won. Together once again, we celebrated life!
In 2022, we plan for the biggest and best year yet. We are officially launching our new brand name along with three events planned to knock your socks off. Field Gay returns, Q-Prom will be back live and in-person, and a new festival is coming this Fall.
Get ready Q-ties! We are ShrevePride and we are here for you!
